Each year, volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours to Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts programs.  Volunteers make a vital difference to people, parks, arts and our community.  City staff provide all necessary training.  Visit one of the pages below to learn more about current and ongoing volunteer opportunities.

Special Event Volunteer Opportunities
City events such as the Encinitas Holiday Parade, Spring Egg Hunt, Arbor Day, Dia De Los Muertos and occasional festivals and celebrations.

Senior Services Volunteer Opportunities
The Encinitas Senior Center seeks volunteer drivers to keep up with senior passenger demand and offers mileage reimbursement.

Fire Department  

Fire Prevention Internship

Fire Prevention Interns assist with a wide range of fire safety inspections covering new construction, commercial, residential and improvements.  Fire Prevention Interns will learn and apply state and local building codes, learn administrative functions related to Fire Department administration and how to apply principles and techniques of fire and life safety.    Interns also assist the Fire Department's public education efforts and represent the Encinitas Fire Department and public events.

Emergency Management Internship

The Encinitas Fire Department provides emergency management services for the Cities of Encinitas, Del Mar and Solana beach.  The Emergency Management Intern conducts research and collects data regarding emergency management and preparation to assist with the update of the Department's emergency management plans.  This position also develops marketing material for public education campaigns.  Other duties include maintaining social media sites, providing customer support and assisting with Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) academies.

Human Resources

This position assists the Department by coordinating the City’s Volunteer/Internship Program and assisting with special projects.  The duties include receiving and screening applicants then matching them with opportunities in the different City Departments and the San Dieguito Water District. This position also collects data and prepares reports regarding volunteer and intern activities. The intern will learn and apply the principles of recruiting, interviewing and selecting candidates, while gaining valuable insight to local government operations such as, public safety, city management, planning, engineering, finance, information technology and community services.

Information Technology  

The Information Technology Division has Geographic Information Systems (GIS) intern opportunities.  As part of the Information Technology,  the Applications/GIS team serves as the primary provider of GIS-based services for the City working on both citywide implementation as well as department-specific projects.

The ideal candidate would have a high degree of attention to detail, ability to focus on delivering the highest possible data quality, and eagerness to learn about real-world applications of GIS.  We have had many student volunteers get their GIS certificate internship credits with us over the years and offer a motivating, fast-paced, team environment.  

Responsibilities may include:

  • Inputting data into GIS from Engineering drawings;
  • Assist with developing preplan building footprints with room detail to pass on to Fire staff for site walkthroughs and additional data collection;
  • Normalizing and integrating multidisciplinary data into GIS formats;
  • Work with IT professionals and department subject matter experts towards successful completion of assigned projects.
