Encinitas Marine Safety Division is staffed year-round with six full-time officers and a complement of Seasonal Lifeguards.

During the summer season, Encinitas employs approximately 65 seasonal lifeguards, many of whom remain available for off-season assignments.

What are the Requirements to Become an Encinitas Lifeguard?

Apply, Test, and Interview for Lifeguard Trainee. Successful applicants are hired, then must complete the Encinitas in-house Open Water Lifeguard Academy that includes Emergency Medical Response/CPR.


Enroll in Miramar College:

v1)  FIPT 160 Intro to Open Water Lifeguarding (Lifeguard Academy) (or come from an approved USLA agency).

v 2)  FIPT 309B Emergency Medical Care of the Sick and Injured. (Red Cross EMR includes BLS CPR).  This step can be skipped if applicant is already an EMT (possess a San Diego County Card) and CPR for Professional Rescuer/Healthcare Provider.
