As we work to process the racism and injustice currently gripping our nation, the City of Encinitas stands firm in its commitment to being part of the solutions that will ultimately affect real change on this front.

We know that words alone will not do anything. We must dig deep to honestly reflect on and challenge deeply held notions, as well as move tangible efforts forward, that will uproot systemic racism that has long plagued our nation.

The road ahead will not be easy, but the destination is worth the effort.

With that in mind, the City of Encinitas is committed to creating forums for open dialogues about racism. We support the community’s constitutional right to peacefully protest. We will continue to uphold and deepen our city values like respectful partnerships, which encourage honest dialogue, diversity in thinking and problem solving; data gathering and sharing, which enhances informed decision making; and community outreach, which seeks feedback from the community on important issues like this one.  We encourage multiracial inclusiveness as it enriches and strengthens us.

We will also work with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to build a culture of trust within our communities. Together, we will identify opportunities for change in policies, procedures, and training to ensure that everyone – regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, creed, or gender – is treated fairly and equally.

This is a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. How we respond as individuals, as well as a community, will write our next chapter.

We firmly and unequivocally condemn acts of discrimination and violence carried out against persons of color. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones of individuals who have been directly affected by such violence, or racial discrimination of any kind.

There is no place for this in Encinitas, or anywhere else for that matter.

In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

We commit to keeping this at the forefront of our minds as we collectively work together toward healing and meaningful change.
