Encinitas residents invited to attend housing workshop on Dec. 16

Residents interested in learning more about how the city is planning for future housing needs in Encinitas are invited to attend a special meeting of the City Council and the Housing Element Task Force on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 8:30 a.m. at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive.

During the meeting, the City Council and the Task Force will consider potential sites that have been identified for various housing options, along with a discussion on state law changes and their impact on Encinitas. Residents will have the opportunity to provide comment and listen in on the discussion.

Developing a housing plan, or what’s technically called a “housing element,” is state mandate and is a required part of the city’s general plan. The housing plan is anticipated to be placed on the November 2018 ballot.  Once adopted, the housing element will become the “blueprint” for city planners and will outline what type of housing units can be built where.

“The housing element update is about more than just meeting a state mandate – it is about helping Encinitas provide housing options for all of its residents and workers in the various occupations that make up a thriving city,” said Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. “We hope our residents will join us in this informal setting as we review sites to help us meet our community’s housing needs.”
