New 2nd St. Sidewalks Coming and Ficus Pilot Program Update

The City of Encinitas will be replacing sidewalks, curbs and gutters associated with infrastructure removed as part of the Ficus Trees Demonstration Project located at: 655-687 Second Street.

The City has been working with the businesses adjacent to the Ficus trees to minimize the effects the trees are having on their quality of life. The surrounding infrastructure was removed earlier this year to perform selective root maintenance and to install root barriers to a depth of 30 inches in areas where root intrusion was noted. City staff, with the assistance and input from industry professionals, developed a five-year crown reduction pilot program to help mitigate the impacts that the trees have on surrounding infrastructure. The Urban Forestry Advisory Committee (UFAC) reviewed the program after the first year and recommended to continue this program for an additional year. In addition to continuing the pilot program on selected trees, the City will be performing increased maintenance on all of the downtown Ficus trees, with the intent of reducing canopies to prevent branches from overhanging buildings, and opening up tree canopies to improve light and airiness in a fashion that benefits public safety and tree wellness.

The City has contracted L.C. Paving to perform the replacement of sidewalks, curbs and gutters removed as part of the pilot project. Replacement is scheduled to begin: January 3, 2018 and will be completed in 20 business days. During this time, there will be traffic delays, parking restrictions and closed streets.
