Orpheus Park/Paul Ecke Central Bike Project
Updated: 09.06.24
PROJECT STATUS
The preliminary project feasibility and conceptual design for a bicycle and pedestrian pathway began in August 2024. Conceptual design options are anticipated to be ready by spring 2025.
BACKGROUND
Paul Ecke Central Elementary School is located along N. Vulcan Avenue and Union Street in Leucadia. Orpheus Park is located on the neighboring parcel behind and above the school property, along Orpheus Avenue.
Many families and local residents use Orpheus Park as their primary access route to and from Paul Ecke School and the neighboring communities. On Sundays, the popular Leucadia Farmer's Market is also hosted at the Paul Ecke School property.
The area between the two properties features a steep slope and stairs as the only way to travel between these two locations. There is currently no formal pathway to accommodate bikes, strollers or wheelchairs to travel to the school through the neighboring park.
The School District Liaison Committee approached the city to share and support the community's desire for a safe bike and alternate modes access pathway between Paul Ecke Central Elementary School and Orpheus Park.
City Council provided funding for the preliminary conceptual design. Additional funding is needed to finalize the design and complete the construction phases. This project supports the Mobility & Alternate Modes Focus Area of the City's Strategic Plan and helps to promote mode shift and micromobility as well as Safe Routes to School.
