Climate Action
The Sustainability Division works collaboratively with all City departments to meet the City’s greenhouse gas reduction targets established in the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP). The City’s CAP provides a roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of various policies, programs, and projects. The CAP set ambitious targets to reduce emissions: 13% below 2012 levels by 2020 and 44% below 2012 levels by 2030. More information about the City's CAP can be found on the Climate Action page. Progress on meeting CAP goals and targets can be tracked on the City’s Climate Dashboard.
Coastal Zone Management
The Sustainability Division also oversees beach nourishment projects and acts as the liaison for all coastal activities for the City. Through beach nourishment projects the City periodically adds sand along our coastline to provide shoreline protection, erosion control, recreational benefits, and habitat enhancement. Wide, sandy beaches along the shoreline attract tourists, improve property values, protect public and private structures, and minimize bluff failures. The California Coastal Sediment Management Workgroup has categorized Encinitas beaches as “erosional hot spots” due to the observed natural sand dispersal rate . High energy waves and severe winter storms plus the threat of sea level rise contribute to a constant need protect our shoreline and periodically add sand.
