Climate Action Plan Update
Background
The City of Encinitas’ current Climate Action Plan (CAP), adopted in 2018 and amended in 2020, affirmed the City’s commitment to preserving the natural environment, increasing sustainability efforts, and improving overall quality of life by outlining seven strategies and 20 measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the following areas:
The 2018 CAP set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 13% below 2012 levels by 2020 and 44% below 2012 levels by 2030. Through the implementation of our seven emission reduction strategies, the City has made real progress by surpassing our 2020 goal and reducing emissions by 14.6% below 2012 levels. Our CAP update will revaluate priorities and determine new targets based on an updated baseline.
CAP Update
As outlined in the 2018 CAP, the City committed to updating the CAP every five years. The CAP update process has been initiated and will involve the development of an updated baseline greenhouse gas emissions inventory and projection, updated emissions reduction targets, updated emission-reduction goals, and revised or additional measures, as warranted.
As the City develops new targets, goals and measures for the CAP, we will seek public input and suggestions on the actions the City can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City will host a number of workshops and public hearings for community members to share their input on the CAP update.
Regular progress reports on the CAP update process will be shared at the City’s Environmental Commission meetings.
Upcoming Events
The second CAP update workshop took place Tuesday, July 16th, 5:30pm at the Encinitas Community & Senior Center (1140 Oakcrest Park Dr, Encinitas, CA 92024.) The list of draft proposed measures is now available for review. Opportunity for comment will be at a future Environmental Commission meeting, by filling out the survey below and/or by emailing comments to climateaction@encinitasca.gov.
