In 1922, the San Dieguito Irrigation District was formed under the California Irrigation District Act to provide water service to the area. Now known as San Dieguito Water District, it is a public agency providing water and recycled water services within the communities of Old Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff, and portions of New Encinitas. The San Dieguito Water District is a member agency to San Diego County Water Authority.

In 1986, the unincorporated communities in the region incorporated as the City of Encinitas. San Dieguito Water District is a subsidiary of the City of Encinitas.

The San Dieguito Water District services the communities of Old Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff, and portions of New Encinitas.

 The District’s water supply includes water purchased from the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA), local supplies and recycled water for irrigation purposes.

San Dieguito Water District receives water from the SDCWA. The SDCWA receives imported water from the Colorado River Aqueduct and from the California State Water Project.

San Dieguito Water District has access to local supplies. The District maintains storage rights to local surface water at Hodges Reservoir.

The San Dieguito Water District is committed to providing a safe and reliable water supply. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the California Division of Drinking Water mandate all water agencies to produce an annual document educating customers about their drinking water quality. Based on our water quality monitoring data collected, the District’s tap water satisfied all state and federal drinking water health standards.
